Sheridan Smith, star of Gavin and Stacey and Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps, is to star as the lead role in Bridget Jones the Musical, if it is to make it to the West End. Sheridan, who is no stranger to the stage having originated the London lead role of Elle Woods in Legally Blonde the Musical, has been rehearsing for the part with Helen Fielding who created the character in her 1996 novel, Bridget Jones’s Diary.
Also on board is pop star Lily Allen, who has written twelve songs for the musical and has been praised by her friend, Elton John, for participating in the project. Fielding has also praised her, saying of Allen’s songs,
“It’s going to give a new perspective. Lily Allen has completed the songs and they’re fantastic. The music is a really catchy, unusual mixture of all different styles of music. I think people will love it.”
Bridget Jones has previously been made into a successful film which was released in 2001 and starred Renee Zellweger, Hugh Grant and Colin Firth. Zellweger was nominated for an Academy Award for her role of a British woman who is determined to improve herself in a single year by finding true love. Her accounts are written in her diary and the story is a feel-good and hilarious tale, with the famous ‘granny pants’ scene blazed in the minds of those who have seen the movie!
Bridget Jones the Musical has not yet had an official announcement for an opening at the West End, but be sure to keep checking here as with rehearsals underway, it could be any day now!
